Is art imitating life? In Kate Hudson‘s latest ads for Ann Taylor, the actress looks like she’s taking on the role of stylist for the shoot. And since “clothing designer” is one of the bullet points she added her to her resumé in 2013, it’s no surprise that she looks incredibly comfortable assuming that persona for the line’s spring 2014 campaign.

The goal of the photos, shot by Mikael Jansson, was to capture Hudson’s multi-hyphenate career in one super-busy day. And again, art imitated life, as the working mom brought her two sons to the Hollywood set where she was spending the day in the director’s chair (and simultaneously modeling). “I love the spring collection,” Hudson said. “It captures my life as a working mom and how we all balance those parts of our lives.”

Sons Ryder, 10, and Bingham, 2, join their mom in the ads, even getting in on the action by holding a clapboard (presumably to yell “Action!” before the production assistants fire up the wind machine to get Hudson’s hair just so) and hanging out on her hip while she directs the camera. And while some actresses might be afraid to be upstaged by super-cute costars, Hudson doesn’t seem to mind one bit.

The actress also helped direct the feel of the ads by handpicking her favorite pieces from the collection — like the fitted pinstripe button-up she pairs with a perforated white pencil skirt seen in the exclusive behind-the-scenes photo below. And given her all-time favorite item of clothing, it’s no surprise she was immediately drawn to the top. “I have to say I love a crisp white shirt, any time of year, with anything,” she tells PEOPLE. “[With] jeans. Under a trench. With a sexy black pencil skirt. Even over a bikini in summer!”

The Latest Craze in Disco Styles Is See-Through Jeans—but Beware of Foggy Bottoms

Posted on

On a clear day, you can see forever—or at least that’s the wicked thought behind L.A. designer Agi Berliner’s transparent idea: see-through jeans. Exhibitionists notwithstanding, most folks wear them over bathing suits or as attention-getting evening wear with halters, garter belts and body stockings. Created for the disco crowd, the $34 jeans are selling like, well, hot pants. In just six weeks, 25,000 pairs have already been sold in such major department store chains as Macy’s, Bonwit’s and Saks.

“What’s limiting American designers is that we’re afraid to do something different,” says Berliner, 32, a Hungarian émigré who fled with her family to the U.S. in 1956. Agi thought up the gimmick in London while marveling at the way plastics were being employed by designers of punk fashion. In her L.A. office, where she designs for La Parisienne junior sportswear, Agi spent five days on the phone and six weeks testing to come up with the right plastic.

Agi herself tried out the French-cut jeans with the zipper in front, and quickly found several problems: Some plastics tore away from stitching, others wouldn’t bend and all fogged with perspiration. The ideal material proved to be a vinyl supplied by a bookbinder. The steam was eliminated with a series of vents behind the knees and in the crotch. “They’re no hotter than polyester pants,” claims Agi, “and if you wear them with tights, they won’t stick to your legs.”

Whatever the discomfort and despite the problem of Saturday night feverishness, discomaniacs report one major advantage of the plastic pants: no laundry bills. To keep Berliner’s see-through jeans clear, all the wearer needs is a little Windex.

Super confused – when you say “crop top” I think we’re going to see her stomach. So unless her stomach is a belt your headline is uber confusing.

Kate looks different. Could be plastic surgery or botox but let the experts decide!
